best internet provider” in the industry, the former president said.
The company was formally launched last week in a well attended event by President Pranab Mukherjee. He had also officially handed over its formal licence to the company.
The company is offering the services in 64 towns and urban centres with coverage of over 99 per cent of the country’s population.
“With our fiber-to-home (FTTH) solution, we can deliver the next-generation broadband and TV services to every home,” said Sanjay Gupta, CEO of Bharti Airtel.
Prior to Airtel, the company had bid for licences for both the spectrum and licences for the rollout of FTTH networks in 2010.
Since then, the company has extensively evaluated both spectrum and FTTH models across global markets.
“We also assessed the path to own the networks, which would require upfront capital investment. This could be done either through a joint venture or even strategic sale. Since we evaluated both models, we believe Airtel is the best partner to launch the only truly sustainable future for FTTH in India,” Batra said.
As a part of the long-term vision of the company, Airtel has already invested over Rs 3,500 crore over the last three years in its Network Campus Infrastructure (NGI), which is located across India.
It is expected to scale up the investment to over Rs 10,000 crore by 2022.
“Our FTTH network will enable multiplexing of all TV channels into a single HD channel for the consumers with a clear vision, right now, of achieving 50 per cent national television penetration with our FTTH network. This will lead to higher usage of data and services and help India leapfrog to world-class broadband connectivity,” Batra said.
Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telecommunications services provider, said its FTTH network will be scalable to provide coverage of over 1 lakh km by 2022.
The network will also be scalable to serve customers across multiple devices including mobile phones, computers, tablets and televisions.
