PS – Speaking of AWS …

Redmonk Best of 2016 Awards (PDF)

As many of you know, we ran a competition on our blog to determine the best of 2016. These awards are given to products, services and companies. Redmonk has also just launched a list of the 10 Best Cloud Platforms. We've come up with the 6 winners and one "best in class". According to comScore's latest U.S. Digital (Platform & Device) Rankings for 2016 (the first data set of the year), Amazon is by far the largest cloud provider in the U.S., with an astounding 89.1% market share. To put that into context, in the web services space Google has 19.2% and Microsoft only 1.4%.

This should come as no surprise, as Amazon has invested $10 billion in infrastructure in the past year alone. And remember that AWS is free for basic services and you only pay for the storage you use, plus any I/O traffic. I thought it would be interesting to see how Amazon stacks up against other providers in the cloud. Not just in the U.S., but across the globe. So here's my take on the six cloud providers with significant presence outside the U.S., grouped by region.

Europe/CIS/Africa

AWS has significant presence in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). In fact, it is the largest cloud provider in the region, with 36.8% market share in 2016. Google comes in second place, with 22.4%.

Amazon also has significant presence in South America. Its South American presence spans multiple AWS regions and some individual servers. As Amazon's Latin American operations head Fernando Palazuelo put it, "Latin America is one of our largest and fastest growing regions, where we are opening more than 100 new AWS data centers every year. Today, we have data centers in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela and Uruguay. We have more than 800 customers and their data, applications and services are running on AWS, more than on any other cloud in the region."

Amazon Redshift is also used by many companies in the U.S. for analyzing data from various sources. For example, it's an alternative to SQL Server in customer data warehouses.

Amazon is also the #1 cloud provider for the media and entertainment industry, as shown below.

The "best in class"

AWS won the Best in Class award for the second year in a row. There were two Cloud Platforms in the running for the award:

Microsoft Azure — Microsoft also claimed the #2 spot on the Cloud Platforms list for the second year in a row.
